URAN is a Serious Game to empower children (age 10-12) to develop a perspective on a sustainable society. In a safe environment they are challenged to sustain their own planet, taking into account the complexity of the challenges they are faced with. Through experience they learn how their actions can (positively) impact society both short- and long-term.

URAN consists of several elements that together form the mechanics and steer the dynamics of the game: resources, facilities, bank, play board, policy board, guiding mechanism, event cards and a lawbook.

Children are asked to sustain their own planet, making use of the elements handed over to them. However, the rules of the game are not set in stone: they can influence these with the decision they take.

Every round they are challenged with an event card, that represents a societal issue in of the five categories that were distracted from the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations: health, economy, environment, equality and peace. Depending on how they respond to the challenges, the dynamics of the change can change.

By giving children the opportunity to transform news articles into new event cards, URAN can be expanded and updated according to actualities.

URAN is a continuously changing game – just like society in real life is.
